Students are like Great Books; each one comes to you with a different story – different characters, setting, plot, tone. As a teacher, I value the “story” each student tells for its unique and special qualities. I am also conscious of the fact that what I “write” in each book will leave an indelible impression on that student and his or her life story. This places a tremendous responsibility in the hands of any teacher. This is a responsibility that I take to heart.
As an instructor, I strive to make a connection to each student and the unique experience that they bring to my classroom. When students can personally relate to the material presented in a class, they are more likely to make the material their own, and subsequently make connections to the higher-level ideas in that material. Everyone’s experience is valued in my classroom.
I have taught English, Business Writing, Fiction Writing, Creative Writing, and Journalism on the college level. I am also a high school educator. I love what I do - every part of it. I love transferring my passion for reading and writing to my students, and watching them "catch the bug!"
